Who We Are
In 1992, Alex McAlister left his position as President of GM Development, Inc., Architects and Builders, in Chicago, where he designed and built luxury custom homes and commercial properties for almost ten years under the tutelage of his partner, the famed architect, Gerald Grethen. A former union master carpenter and a college graduate with degrees in Environmental Studies, and Economics, Alex moved his family to Charlottesville, Virginia, and returned to his Old Dominion roots as a direct descendant of Carter Braxton, Virginia Signer of the Declaration of Independence, and St. George Tucker of Colonial Williamsburg. It is not surprising, with this background, that McAlister is determined to produce homes and designs that reflect the natural setting, today’s modern eco-friendly lifestyles, and the area’s rich Virginia heritage.
Alex has enjoyed over 40 years of success as a builder, developer, and architectural designer. Alex believes in hands-on experience with every phase of the construction and design process, including his incredible ability to envision the house in its setting. “Braxton Design Homes has a complete selection of contractual services, including building with your plans, custom designing from your program or building using one of our established plans.” They offer eco-friendly engineering and design of the site, interior and exterior sustainable architectural design to fit your budget, hands on supervision by construction masters with over 75 years of experience, and help deciding which construction materials and techniques are appropriate. Alex says, “Your contractor’s experience is your first and last line of defense from purchasing a construction system that fails.”
“Our strength, over the years, has been in our coordination of the client’s needs with the design. We like taking a client’s dream and building it into reality,” Alex says. We build with the belief that our homes will be proudly standing 300 years from now!”
